Japanese Ghosts & Demons marketing video for Derby Museums' exhibition
About the video
Our creative consultation and video production allow museums and non-profits in Derby (and beyond) to make their investment go a long way.
This one was hot on the heels of the Derby Museums ‘Let’s Make Christmas’ marketing campaign video (featuring beautiful handmade crafts from local makers and designers).
Derby Museums commissioned us again to produce a short promo marketing video for its Japanese Season of Culture exhibitions, on loan from The Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.
It was again optimised for social media and if you’re looking for something to do in Derby, you could do worse than to find out more about paying a visit here.
The campaign was designed to drive footfall to the Museums & Art Gallery shop, so here’s another hint - you know where to go!

Production notes
From Rachael
We value creativity and thinking outside the box, so enjoyed the chance to bring a truly integrated approach in the artwork and video promotion
Rachael was able to review the prints well ahead of the exhibit (on loan from the @ashmoleanmuseum) a really lovely detail on the gown of the hero print stood out. It's a delicate reddish leaf on the lining of the skirt
As she mocked up the posters, flyers and bus station boards as well as social media posts, she was able to make a consistent approach to the design
In the same way that Japanese art has a signature seal on each print, she applied a border of the reddish leaf motif; almost like a 21st-century digital 'woodblock' seal on the new artwork
In the video edit she mimicked the design details such as the sweeping angled solid colours as each exhibit was introduced. At the end of the video she also animated the leaf motif to emulate falling leaves from a tree
From Simon
Once again, the source material and soundtrack were king - the quality and interest of the items (like a samurai suit) was impeccable, making for a very engaging video
The soundtrack is an interesting blend of Far East (which is fitting), with a hint of Scotland, which gives it a richness and resonance
Rachael got a sneak peek behind the scenes, allowing her to get up close and personal, capturing all the fun, quirky and delightful details - there really are fighting frogs!
In fact, there is so much going on in the exhibits themselves, that we are still noticing things, even when we pause the video on re-view
Rachael custom-designed the ‘fluttering’ opening and closing slides to give added depth to the video, plus fitting with the strings of the soundtrack and the Japanese vibe
These effects were designed in Adobe After Effects using custom animations and digital cut-outs from the source material itself
What they said
Vicky Washington at Derby Museums has again been a joy to work with and The Ashmolean Museum was happy too with the finished article.
